Anti-Aging Summer Skincare Routine

The summer is an exciting time of long sunny days and tanned and glowing skin. However, the reality for many can be hot, sweaty, sun burnt and dehydrated skin. The summer season brings with it a plethora of anti-aging skin-care decisions and challenges.

Experts recommend following these anti-aging skincare elements to help keep your skin clear, glowing, hydrated and fresh looking throughout the summer months.

  • Protect Your Skin with SPF

During the long sunny days you are continually being exposed to damaging levels of UV light rays. Apply a broad-spectrum, waterproof sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on all exposed skin to protect and do not neglect your hands, feet, ears and lips. To be at its most effective, sunscreen needs to be applied over face oil (as applying oil over the sunscreen will reduce the sunscreens effectiveness). Sunscreens should be the last step in your skin-care routine and should be reapplied every couple of hours throughout the day. Make sure you carry plenty with you and to set an alarm on your device to remind you to reapply throughout the day.

  • Lighten-up

Just as we shed our winter protective clothing in favour of lighter and gentler options, we need to follow a lightweight skin-care routine for the summer months. A gentler, foaming cleanser in summer instead of a heavier cream or oil cleanser would be a suitable option. A cleanser that is light and gentle and hydrating at the same time would be an ideal summer choice.

  • Continue to Moisturize

Despite the hot and humid weather that can leave your skin feeling sweaty and oily, you still need to moisturize. Sweat does not count as moisturizer! Moisturizers are most effective when applied to your skin while it is still slightly damp as this helps the skin absorb the product, hydrate and trap in the water that provides an overall more youthful appearance. Moisturizers help to strengthen the outer layer of the skin which acts as the barrier and first line of defence against harmful pollutants. Opt for a lightweight nourishing and hydrating moisturizer that is easy to apply throughout the day.

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps to prevent hyperpigmentation, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helps boost collagen production, brightens and evens skin tone, protects from photo damage and helps to combat many other signs of aging. Apply a few drops to your skin after cleansing and before you apply your moisturizer. It is recommended to follow a gradual approach to applying active ingredients by slowly integrating it into your skincare routine over a period of weeks.

  • Exfoliate for a Brighter Looking Complexion

The hot weather and humidity can leave your skin feeling dry and irritated. Regularly and gently exfoliate your skin to promote cell turnover and collagen production. Select a gentle formula (harsh ingredients may cause micro tears in your skin leading to skin damage) and work on the principle of undertaking your exfoliation on a one to two days per week in the summer months to begin with and increase depending on your skin needs. If you currently exfoliate as part of your anti-aging skincare routine, consider undertaking this a little more regularly during the summer months. Avoid the temptation to overdo this as this may damage your skin.

  • Avoid comedogenic (clogging) makeup

Continuing with the lighter summer theme, select makeup that has not been formulated with pre-clogging ingredients (non comedogenic) which do not block or obstruct your skin and allows it to breath and not clog up.

  • Adjust Your Shower

The long hot summer days for may mean more frequent showers with the temptation to indulge under a long shower following a long hard summer day or after a hard workout. However, this can lead to over-drying your skin, so stick with milder temperatures and only for the short period of time you need to wash.

  • Seek the Shade

Summer is a time where we want to take advantage of the good weather by bearing our skin to the elements. In addition to sunscreen, further protect you skin by wearing sun protective clothing (e.g. wide-brimmed hat, long sleeved shirts, pants and sun-UV protection sunglasses). Clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) offers more effective and comprehensive protection against the damaging rays of the sun.

  • Use self-tanning products

Whether you get a tan from the sun, tanning bed or any other form of tanning equipment; all of these emit harmful UV rays that accelerate the speed at which your skin ages and each and every time you get a tan this way, you are aging your skin prematurely. Incorporate self-tanning products to achieve that glowing tanned look without the harmful exposure to the sun.

  • Apply Retinol / Bio-Retinol

To help combat the stressors the summer months place on your skin, consider adding Retinol or Bio-Retinol to your anti-aging skincare regime. Retinol can leave your skin dryer and more irritated in the winter months as your skin is already under a lot of stress. If you are adding retinol to your routine, begin by using a small amount on your face and neck a few times a week at night (before using it on a nightly basis). If you are using a Bio-Retinol, you should be able to use this in the morning and at night on a daily basis.
